Whittier PTO Meeting TTuesday February 12
Last week’s PTO meeting was postponed due to weather, which means you have another chance to come to our February meeting!  Please join us tonight, February 12, in the Community Room 7 PM – 8:30 PM.  Highlights will include:

  • LEGO STEM guest speaker
  • Presentation/demo of Membership Toolkit
  • Discussion PTO programming for kids with special needs
  • Updates on Trivia Night, Book Fair, DivCo and more!

Trivia Night was a BIG WINNER!
HUGE thanks to Jessica Daly and Padmini Kanive for the beautiful execution of another successful Trivia Night. The surprise pizza was especially a treat. Thank you to all the volunteers who made the event happen in different ways. We look forward to next year’s Trivia Night.

Silent Auction at Whittier Fun Fair– Host a Party to Benefit the PTO!
Whittier’s Annual Silent Auction is happening at the Whittier Fun Fair on Saturday, March 2.  The Silent Auction is your chance to sign up for/bid on parties or experiences that will be hosted by fellow Whittier families.  These parties are a fun way to get to know others in the Whittier community!  To get ready for the Silent Auction, you can:

  • Consider hosting a party!  Find a friend to co-host with you and submit the attached form by the February 26 deadline.  Donated parties (or experiences) can be family oriented, for kids, or for adults—up to you!
  • Remember to bring your calendar to the Fun Fair so that you are ready to bid on these parties or experiences.  Offerings in the past have included progressive dinner parties, game nights, family movie nights, poker nights, craft parties for kids, and sporting experiences.

Whittier 101 Series on February 19
On Tuesday, February 19th from 6 – 8 PM at Whittier, our school’s student support specialist, Chasity McComb-Williams, and social worker, Sideeka Ryan, in conjunction with Principal Robinson will discuss positive behavioral interventions in the classroom. This will include PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) that are implemented.  Childcare will be provided.  You can view the flyer here.

Whittier Black History Literacy Night
Plan to celebrate Black History Month at Black History Literacy Night at Whittier on Wednesday, February 27, 6 PM – 7:30 PM.  Activities will include story time, crafts, snacks, and more!

Support Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry
Please join Whittier Girl Scout Troop #45556 in supporting the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry by donating non-perishable food items, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and baby items.  Please leave them in the Whittier Lobby now through February 14th!

Save the Date for Parent’s Night Out Thursday February 21! 
Come unwind and socialize with fellow Whittier Parents and your Parent Engagement Team at our social event. The PTO will provide light snacks. Spread the word to other Whittier Families so they can join in on the fun!

Whittier at the Movies – February 22
Join us after school on Friday, February 22 for the movie Smallfoot! Students will be able to purchase tickets for $2 and snacks/goodies for $1 each. An Online Permission Form must be submitted in order for your unaccompanied child(ren) to attend the movie. Permission Forms must be submitted by Thursday, February 21. This is a super fun event for students that depends solely on volunteers so please sign up to volunteer here. If you have any questions, contact Shannon Kazyak at preston_shannon@hotmail.com or Christine Diedrich at christinediedrich@yahoo.com.

Whittier’s Fun Fair: Saturday, March 2nd, 11 AM – 3 PM
Get ready for the Whittier Fun Fair!  Featuring carnival games, teacher raffles, a cake walk, food, a silent auction, and prizes, prizes, prizes!  The flyer can be found here.

Save money and time by purchasing Fun Fair tickets early!  Fill out the form on the flyer here and turn it in to the office by Wednesday 2/27 or order them online here ($1 service fee per package applies for online tickets).

Please plan to donate baked goods for our very-popular Cake Walk!  Drop them off at the Whittier Office on Friday March 1 by 3 PM or bring them to the gym by 10:30 AM on Saturday March 2.

Please sign up to volunteer!  We have 108 volunteer shifts where we need volunteers to serve food, make smoothies, work the ticket booth, and most importantly, work the carnival games!  Shifts are just one hour so that you still have time to enjoy the fair.  Please sign up to volunteer here.  We can’t do it without your help!

Earth Day Committee Meeting 
We have a fabulous presenter lined up for Earth Week festivities, so the hard part is done! Add your name to the sign up and we’ll reach out to find a good time to meet and put the rest of the plans in place. Join us!

Lincoln PTO DivCo Presents Intelligent Lives
On Wednesday, February 20th at Maze Library. 5:30-7:30pm, Lincoln PTO DivCo will show  Intelligent Lives by award-winning film maker Dan Habib.  Intelligent Lives stars three pioneering young American adults with intellectual disabilities – Micah, Naieer, and Naomie – who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce. Panel discussion to follow. Moderated by Paula Kluth and featuring D97 Director of Special Ed Eboney Lofton.

Seeking a Co-President of the PTO
Calling ALL PARENTS—Whittier PTO CO-PRESIDENT SOUGHT FOR 2019-2021 term. As we prepare to plan for the next school year, we would like to invite all parents interested in becoming PTO Co-President to express their interest from now until March 1st. Our fearless leader Brigitte Brostrom will be finishing her two-year term at the end of the school year. If we have multiple interested candidates, we will hold an election. All interested parents, please email Co-President Sofia Villafuerte at sofiavillafuerte@gmail.com with the following information: Name and an answer to the following question: How do you hope to represent Whittier in the PTO leadership?

Role description: As Junior PTO Co-President, you would support the Senior Co-President in the following and other items that come up: running monthly PTO meetings, creating the agenda, attending PTO Council meetings (once a month) and otherwise network with other PTOs, supporting a positive school climate, supporting PTO committees in their functions, recruiting for volunteer vacancies, serving as a liaison between the PTO and school teachers and administration, writing the Greenleaf newsletter monthly.

Black History Month T-Shirts
Suburban Unity Alliance and DivCo with District 97 support have partnered up to celebrate Black History Month in our schools! Through the end of February, you can order a Black History Month t-shirt for your student(s) or yourself. Students can wear their t-shirt proudly to school or hang around the Village. Be sure to tell your child to ask their teacher about one significant fact about black history.  All monies raised will go directly to help under represented students in D97 through dedicated activities powered by DivCo.  https://suad97.itemorder.com/sale?read_message=true
