Volunteers Needed for the Whittier Fall Book Fair!
The legendary Book Fair is next week but we cannot do it with you! Please take a moment to find a volunteer slot that works for you. This is a fun and easy way to help the school and watch the kiddos get excited about reading. Our school receives 55% of the sales from the Fair! Please support this valuable fundraiser by pitching in for an hour or two. You will see on the Sign Up that in addition to the normal Book Fair hours, Fair set up and Fair clean up, there is a Teacher Preview day that could use some extra hands and some snack donations. Anything you can do is welcome. Signup here: http://signup.com/go/DCKKhXn
Finally, if you need to bring your kids, NO PROBLEM! Kids LOVE to help out at the Fair, too.
Art to Remember
Whittier is participating in Art to Remember, a creative fundraiser that offers you the chance to purchase keepsakes made with your child’s artwork. These keepsakes include travel mugs, nightlights, journals, bookmarks and more—they make great gifts! Be on the lookout for an order form coming soon in your child’s backpack!
Green Team Announces New Vestibule Recycling Bin: Plastic Toys
Have extra plastic toys from birthday parties, pinatas, McDonald’s? Are they piling up in your house? Want to get rid of them, but hate to throw them away? Recycle clean, like-new small-sized toys in the new bin located in the School vestibule outside the Office. Teachers and Staff may take from the bin to award motivational classroom prizes, etc.
The Green Team Seeks Volunteers for the Following:
Earth Day Lead
Not a year long commitment – planning out events for April’s Earth Day; can be as involved as you want. Work with a committee to get the event planned.
Self-paced commitment – once every few weeks, pop into the vestibule and see what recycled items need to be redistributed, managed to Art, Office Depot, etc.
Set up and advertise, collect and recycle holiday lights from end of November through January.
Zero Waste Lead
Check in with the leaders of each event i.e. Fun Run, Coffee Meet Ups, Teacher Dinners, and aid in making the event zero waste.
Fall Thatcher Woods Hike Lead
Advertise in newsletter a meet-up at Thatcher Woods for a group hike. Be willing to attend the hike and welcome attendees.
Please see the signups for taking the lead on these and other Green Team efforts and events!
WISE Volunteer Coordinator/s Needed!
We need one to two people to take over as WISE Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible! This position is essential to the day-to-day running of the WISE program during each session, and WISE cannot run without it. Responsibilities for the WISE Volunteer Coordinator role include:
- Recruit volunteers for attendance and dismissal and be the point of contact for the volunteers throughout the session. (Volunteers have already been recruited for this session!)
- Maintain stock of WISE snacks. Historically, snacks have been purchased and delivered by Costco. The Coordinator is reimbursed for the cost of the snacks.
- Communicate with parents and the WISE committee regarding student discipline concerns.
- Update the WISE binder once per session. This may include providing a list of WISE enrollees to teachers, preparing attendance lists, etc.
- Monitor WISE e-mail for attendance and dismissal related concerns.
Please contact Maureen Spain if you are interested: firstname.lastname@example.org
Through Whittier PTO’s Birthday Books program you can give a special gift for your child’s birthday (or other special occasion) while also helping to add new books to Whittier Library’s collection! Please see the letter and form for details. You can also learn about how to volunteer for the program on the Birthday Books page of the PTO website.
Support Whittier with the Box Tops for Education program. It’s easy! Just clip and save Box Tops from products you normally buy and send them to school with your child. They quickly add up to significant dollars over the school year. Please see the flyer for more information.
Lunchroom Volunteers Needed!
Interested in helping out in the lunchroom? Whittier could use some extra hands to manage kids during lunch, especially the younger kids. Biggest tasks are helping kids open things, encouraging children to eat and clean up after themselves, helping with spills when necessary, and helping them sort their garbage into recycling, compost and garbage. Lastly, giving lots of positive reinforcement when kids are caught doing the right thing! You can sign up to be a Whittier Lunchroom volunteer at SignUp.Com (http://signup. com/go/jCGfyOi).
